Family Week on South Padre Island

Seven days on South Padre Island with your family is the sweet spot. Long enough to really unwind, short enough that you do not run out of things to do. This day-by-day itinerary mixes beach time, wildlife encounters, water adventures, and chill days so everyone comes home rested and happy — with plenty of stories to tell. Adjust as needed based on your kids' ages, energy levels, and the weather.

1

Arrival & Beach Day

Check in at Dancing Turtle Cay and get settled. Unpack, explore the condo, and let the kids pick their beds. Then head straight to the beach. You are just a short walk away, so there is no need to deal with the car. Spend the afternoon splashing in the waves, building sandcastles, and letting the vacation feeling sink in. Late afternoon, hit the community pool for a fresh-water cool down. For dinner, keep it simple — fire up the kitchen and make a quick meal, or walk to a nearby restaurant for fish tacos and sunset views.

Tip: Hit the grocery store on the way in (HEB in Port Isabel is right before the causeway) to stock up on breakfast supplies, snacks, and beach drinks.

2

Sea Turtle Inc. & Birding Center

Start the morning with a walk to Sea Turtle Inc. right when they open. Beat the crowds and get the best experience. Kids will be fascinated by the sea turtles, and the educational talks are engaging for all ages. Plan for about 1-2 hours. After lunch back at the condo (sandwiches and fruit from the kitchen), head to the SPI Birding and Nature Center. The elevated boardwalks are easy for kids to navigate, and the birds are so large and colorful that even kids who do not care about birds will be impressed. Roseate spoonbills, herons, and pelicans are practically guaranteed. Wind down the afternoon at the beach or pool.

Tip: Bring binoculars if you have them. The Birding Center also sometimes has loaners available.

3

Water Sports Day

Today is about getting on the water. Book a morning activity based on your family's comfort level. Paddleboarding and kayaking on the calm bay side are great for all ages and skill levels. For older kids and teens, jet skiing is a thrill they will talk about for years. Parasailing is another option if everyone is up for it — the views from hundreds of feet up are spectacular.

After a morning of adventure, take the afternoon easy. Beach time, pool time, or just hang out at the condo and rest. Vacation days do not all have to be packed. For dinner, try one of the waterfront restaurants for sunset dining on the bay.

Tip: Book water sports in advance during peak season. Morning slots tend to have calmer water and cooler temperatures.

4

Fishing & Bay Exploration

Book a family-friendly bay fishing tour in the morning. Laguna Madre is calm and sheltered, so even younger kids handle the boat ride well. Speckled trout and redfish are common catches, and the guides are experienced at keeping kids engaged and excited. Most half-day trips run about 4 hours.

In the afternoon, explore the bay side of the island. Drive or walk along the bay front, watch the shrimp boats, and look for dolphins from shore (they are surprisingly easy to spot if you are patient). If anyone caught fish on the morning trip, cook them up for dinner at the condo. There is nothing better than eating fish you caught that same day.

Tip: If a full fishing charter is not in the budget, head to the jetties at Isla Blanca Park for free shore fishing. Grab bait and tackle from a local shop.

5

Schlitterbahn & Shopping

This is the big adventure day for kids. Head to Schlitterbahn waterpark for a half or full day of slides, lazy rivers, and wave pools. Bring sunscreen (you will need to reapply) and arrive when they open to get the most out of your visit. The park has food options inside, or you can bring a cooler to leave in the car.

After Schlitterbahn, spend the late afternoon browsing the shops along Padre Boulevard. Souvenir shops, shell shops, and beach gear stores are fun to wander through, and the kids will want to pick out something to remember the trip. Grab dinner at a casual spot on the way back.

Tip: Buy Schlitterbahn tickets online in advance for a discount and to skip the line at the gate.

6

Dolphin Watching & Special Dinner

Book a morning dolphin watching tour on Laguna Madre Bay. This is often the highlight of the whole trip for kids. Bottlenose dolphins are resident in the bay, and most tours have a near-perfect sighting rate. The dolphins are playful, curious, and frequently swim right alongside the boat. Tours last 1-2 hours and depart from the bay-side marinas.

Spend the afternoon at the beach one last time. Build the ultimate sandcastle, take a long walk along the water, and soak in the Gulf breeze. For your last full evening, treat the family to a nicer dinner. Sea Ranch or one of the waterfront spots is perfect for a memorable last night. Watch the sunset over the bay and toast to a great week.

Tip: Take a family photo at sunset on the beach. The light is magical, and you will be glad you have it.

7

Departure Day

Set the alarm early for a sunrise beach walk. The beach is quiet and beautiful at dawn, and it is a peaceful way to say goodbye to the island. Head back to the condo, make breakfast one last time, and start packing up. The washer and dryer are your friend here — run a quick load so you are not bringing home a bag full of sandy, salty clothes.

If you have time before checkout, grab breakfast at one of the local spots for one last island meal. Stop at the Port Isabel Lighthouse on the way off the island for a quick visit and a last look back at South Padre from the top. Then hit the road with a car full of happy, sun-kissed kids and start planning your return trip.

General Tips for Your Family Week

  • -This itinerary is a guide, not a rulebook. If the kids want to spend three days at the beach and skip everything else, that is a great vacation too.
  • -Build in rest time. Over-scheduling ruins vacations faster than rain does. Every other day should have some downtime built in.
  • -Mornings are best for outdoor activities. The afternoon sun and heat can be intense, especially in summer.
  • -Sunscreen, sunscreen, sunscreen. Apply before you leave the condo, and bring it with you to reapply every two hours.
  • -The full kitchen at Dancing Turtle Cay saves a ton of money. Mix restaurant meals with home-cooked ones.
