South Padre Island Grocery Stores
South Padre Island has exactly one full-service grocery store, and almost every visitor drives right past two much larger ones on the way in without stopping. That single fact shapes every grocery decision you will make here. When you are staying somewhere with a full kitchen, where and when you shop is the difference between one relaxed stop and three irritated trips back across a two-mile bridge. This is where to buy groceries on the island, what is waiting across the causeway in Port Isabel, what gets delivered to your door, and the timing that keeps you from paying island prices for a week of food.

The Short Answer
- On the island:Blue Marlin Supermarket, 2912 Padre Blvd — the only full-service grocery store in town, and a real one, not a convenience store.
- Across the bridge:H-E-B at 1679 Highway 100 and a Walmart Supercenter at 1401 State Highway 100, both in Port Isabel, both open 6 a.m. to 11 p.m., both about 15 minutes from mid-island.
- Delivered:H-E-B delivers to island addresses through its own app and through Instacart, and runs curbside pickup at the Port Isabel store.
- Local and fresh:The South Padre Island Farmers Market runs Sundays, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., year-round at 8605 Padre Blvd, and the seafood markets are in Port Isabel near the boats.
Blue Marlin: The Island's Only Grocery Store
Blue Marlin Supermarket sits mid-island at 2912 Padre Blvd, and the South Padre Island Chamber of Commerce describes it the way locals do: the island's only full-service IGA grocery store. It has a service meat market, an on-site bakery, produce trucked up from Valley growers, a seafood case, and a wine and beer selection better than you would expect from a store this size. You can do a genuine week of shopping here without ever crossing the causeway.
Two honest caveats. Selection is narrower than a mainland Texas supermarket — if you cook from a specific recipe, bring the unusual ingredient with you. And prices are island prices, because every pallet on those shelves came over a two-mile bridge to a town of fewer than 3,000 year-round residents. The store opens at 7:30 a.m. every day; closing time is listed variously between 8 and 10 p.m. depending on the source and the season, so call (956) 761-4966 before a late run. Where Blue Marlin earns its keep: the meat counter and bakery, the mid-week top-up that saves a mainland trip, Gulf seafood on a day the fishing did not cooperate, and the night you arrive too late to want anything to do with Highway 100.
Quick Runs: Convenience Stores and Dollar General
For the forgotten bag of ice, a gallon of milk, or beer at 11 p.m., the island is well covered. Three Stripes stores run 24 hours a day along Padre Boulevard — at 2913, 4112, and 5000 Padre Blvd — and they handle ice, drinks, snacks, breakfast tacos, and gas. There is also a Dollar General at 4400 Padre Blvd, which is the better stop for paper towels, trash bags, cleaning supplies, and shelf-stable basics, though it carries no real produce or fresh meat.
The mistake we see most often is treating these as the grocery plan rather than the backup. A week of convenience-store shopping will quietly cost more than the whole trip's worth of gas to Port Isabel and back. Use them the way islanders do: for the one thing you forgot, and for the 6 a.m. coffee before an early charter. Our broader South Padre Island shopping guide covers the souvenir shops, boutiques, and beach-gear stores along the same stretch of Padre Boulevard.
The Big Stock-Up: H-E-B and Walmart in Port Isabel
The full-size stores are on the mainland, one bridge away. H-E-B — the Texas chain people move out of state and still miss — is at 1679 Highway 100 in Port Isabel, open 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily, with full produce, meat and seafood, bakery and deli departments, curbside pickup, and fuel. Walmart Supercenter is at 1401 State Highway 100, listed at the same 6 a.m. to 11 p.m., and it is the better single stop when your list mixes food with a cooler, boogie boards, beach chairs, a phone charger, and the roasting pan no vacation-rental kitchen owns.
Both sit directly on Highway 100 — the road you are already driving. From the middle of the island, figure about 15 minutes each way including the 2.37-mile Queen Isabella Causeway, and add time on a summer Saturday or a peak check-out morning, when that bridge is the only way on or off the island.
The Timing That Actually Works
Shop before you cross. Whether you are driving up from Brownsville, over from Harlingen, or in from Houston or San Antonio, your last few miles are on Highway 100 and both big stores are on it. Stopping once, with an empty car and an empty cooler bag, is the single best grocery decision on this island. If you would rather not walk a supermarket after five hours of driving, place an H-E-B curbside order for a pickup slot timed to your arrival and have it loaded into the trunk on the way past.
Bring a cooler or a couple of insulated bags regardless — between the checkout and the condo refrigerator there is a bridge, a South Texas afternoon, and usually one wrong turn. After that, plan on a single Blue Marlin top-up around day four rather than a second mainland run. For stays measured in weeks rather than days, the rhythm most Winter Texans settle into is a weekly mainland shop with island top-ups in between. And if you are cooking to keep the trip affordable, that is the right instinct — a kitchen is the biggest line item you can delete from a beach vacation, which is why it leads our list of free and cheap things to do here.
Delivery and Curbside Pickup
You do not have to shop at all. H-E-B delivers to South Padre Island addresses through its own app and website, and the same Port Isabel store is available for same-day delivery through Instacart. Fees and available windows change with your order size and the slot you choose, so read them at checkout rather than trusting a number you read somewhere — including here.
Four things make island delivery go smoothly. Schedule it for after your check-in time, not before — a crate of groceries sitting on a sunny landing for three hours is money thrown away. Leave real notes for the driver about the complex, the building, and where to park, because island condo buildings genuinely do look alike and the numbering is not obvious from Padre Boulevard. Be there to meet the driver if your unit uses keypad entry. And for a first-morning arrival, curbside pickup on the way in still beats delivery, because you control the timing.
Beer, Wine, and Liquor: The Texas Hours
This is the rule that catches out-of-state visitors arriving on a Sunday, and it is state law rather than an island quirk. Stores holding an off-premise beer and wine license — grocery and convenience stores — may sell Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to midnight, Saturday from 7 a.m. to 1 a.m. Sunday morning, and Sunday from 10 a.m. to midnight, according to the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission.
Liquor is a separate license. Package stores may open 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday, are closed every Sunday, and are also closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's Day — worth knowing if you are here for the holidays. Practically: Blue Marlin and the convenience stores cover beer and wine on the island, several package stores along Padre Boulevard cover spirits, and anything stronger than wine for a Sunday has to be bought on Saturday. If the plan is to have someone else pour, our nightlife guide covers the bars.
Gulf Seafood and the Sunday Farmers Market
The best food shopping down here is not in a supermarket at all. The South Padre Island Farmers Market runs every Sunday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 8605 Padre Blvd, year-round, with farm-fresh produce, locally raised eggs, Gulf seafood, honey, and baked goods from South Texas growers and makers. It is small and it is only two hours long, but it is the one place on the island where the tomatoes taste like they grew in a different climate than the shelf ones.
For seafood, cross the bridge. Port Isabel is a working shrimping port and its markets sell within sight of the boats — Gulf Seafood Market at 207 E Maxan St carries red snapper, flounder, shrimp, crab, and oysters both fresh and frozen, and Los Tortugo's Seafood Market is the other long-standing option. A pound of Gulf shrimp bought a few hundred yards from where it was unloaded, peeled at a condo kitchen counter and thrown on the grill, is the cheapest genuinely great meal on this coast. When you would rather someone else cooked it, our guide to waterfront restaurants and the wider island restaurant guide take it from there.
Your First-Day List for a Condo Kitchen
A vacation-rental kitchen comes with the equipment and almost none of the consumables. At Dancing Turtle Cay you already have cookware and utensils, dishes, a full-size refrigerator, oven and stovetop, microwave, dishwasher, coffee maker, and toaster — so the first shop is about what fills them, not what stocks them:
- •Coffee, plus filters if you use a drip machine
- •Cooking oil or spray, salt, and pepper
- •Foil, food wrap, and a roll of paper towels
- •Dish soap, a sponge, and trash bags
- •Breakfast for the first morning — nobody wants to shop before coffee
- •Beach-bag food: fruit, sandwich makings, and more water than you think
- •A bag of ice, and a second one for the cooler you are about to fill
Every item on that list is available on the island, which is exactly the point: get the big shop done on the mainland, and let Blue Marlin and the Stripes on the corner cover the gaps. For the rest of the arrival logistics — what to bring, when to come, and how long the drive really takes — start at our South Padre Island trip planning hub or go straight to the packing list.
South Padre Island Grocery FAQ
Does South Padre Island have a grocery store?
Yes — one. Blue Marlin Supermarket at 2912 Padre Blvd, mid-island, is the island's only full-service grocery store. It is an IGA store with a service meat counter, an on-site bakery, produce from Valley suppliers, a seafood case, and beer and wine. It opens at 7:30 a.m. daily. For a full-size supermarket you cross the Queen Isabella Causeway to Port Isabel, about 15 minutes from the middle of the island.
Is there an H-E-B on South Padre Island?
No. The nearest H-E-B is at 1679 Highway 100 in Port Isabel, just across the causeway and about 15 minutes from the middle of the island. It is open 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily with full produce, meat and seafood, bakery and deli departments, it offers curbside pickup, and it delivers to island addresses through the H-E-B app and through Instacart.
Can you get groceries delivered to South Padre Island?
Yes. H-E-B delivers to island addresses through its own app and website, and the same store is available for same-day delivery through Instacart. Fees and delivery windows vary with your order size and the slot you pick, so check them at checkout. Schedule the delivery for after your check-in time rather than before it, and leave notes about the building, the parking, and where to meet the driver — island condo complexes look alike from the street.
How far is the nearest Walmart to South Padre Island?
The nearest Walmart Supercenter is at 1401 State Highway 100 in Port Isabel, on the mainland side of the Queen Isabella Causeway — roughly 15 minutes from the middle of the island. It sits on Highway 100, the same road you drive in on, which is why the smartest grocery stop is the one you make before you ever cross the bridge.
Are groceries more expensive on South Padre Island?
At the island stores, yes. South Padre Island is a barrier-island town with fewer than 3,000 year-round residents, one grocery store, and one bridge connecting it to everything else, and prices reflect all three. The fix is not to avoid the island stores but to use them for what they are good at: do your big shop at H-E-B or Walmart in Port Isabel on your way in, then top up mid-week at Blue Marlin instead of making a second mainland run.
What time can you buy beer or wine at a store in Texas?
Under Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission rules, stores with an off-premise beer and wine license may sell Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to midnight, Saturday from 7 a.m. to 1 a.m. Sunday morning, and Sunday from 10 a.m. to midnight. Liquor (package) stores are a different license: 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday, closed on Sundays, and also closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's Day. If your Sunday plans involve tequila rather than wine, buy it Saturday.
